What about Sock Seams?

Would someone please tell me why we are taught to put on our socks with the seam on the inside, so that the seam hits our toes? Is it because we want our socks to look neat if anyone ever sees them without being covered by shoes? If that’s the reason, then I’ll let you in on a secret. I promise not to take off my shoes while you are looking, so you won’t know if I wear my socks with the seams on the outside. 🙂
